Training Courses for Carers

Some Great Training Resources

Carers’ Support aims to promote and deliver high quality training to unpaid family carers. All our training is free and is taught by experienced and qualified staff.

The positive feedback that we have received from Carers who have attended our training programmes highlights our approach:

  • Great support, wish the course was longer
  • I found it very useful and informative
  • The interaction with other carers was stimulating
  • All the information was relevant and the support offered effective

(Feedback received from Carers attending our Caring with Confidence course at St Mary’s Bay, Romney Marsh, Kent in July 2013)

Caring with Confidence

Caring with Confidence
Caring with Confidence is a new, free course especially designed for carers. It is run over seven weeks, one day a week, with every session lasting three hours including a half-hour break. Each session deals with a different caring related topic and carers can choose to come to all, or some, of the sessions. The topics of each session are listed below:

  • Finding Your Way – This is an overview of the course and is designed to help carers look at what matters to them and decide which other sessions they might want to attend.
  • Caring and Coping – This gives carers the time and space to look at the emotions involved in looking after someone. It gives ideas/suggestions of strategies they could use to cope with stress more effectively.
  • Caring and Me – This is all about helping carers to look after their own health and wellbeing.
  • Caring Day-to-Day – Looks at the essentials of caring for someone day- to- day, from medication to emergencies at home.
  • Caring and Resources – This looks at the benefits system and sign-posts financial information and resources available to carers.
  • Caring and Life – Invites carers to take time out and think about how they juggle competing demands and how their caring role fits in with other aspects of their life.
  • Caring and Communicating – Uses real-life caring situations to help carers get the best from communicating with professionals and service providers.

In addition to exploring these topics, outside speakers are invited to talk on a variety of subjects related to caring. Throughout the course, carers have the opportunity to meet with other carers and share ideas and experiences.

Caring with Confidence is run at different venues throughout the Ashford, Shepway and Swale areas.

First Aid Courses

First Aid Courses
First Aid aims to prevent an urgent medical problem from worsening, to aid recovery and to preserve life. It is given before emergency medical help arrives (if necessary) and can be the difference between life and death.

You may find it helpful to take a First Aid course, and at Carers Support we regularly run free courses especially for carers. As with Caring with Confidence we run First Aid courses at venues throughout the Ashford, Shepway and Swale areas.

Sessions are held regularly within Ashford, Shepway and Swale. Please contact the office for further information.

Sessions are held regularly within Ashford, Shepway and Swale. Please contact the office for further information.

Rebuilding your life after caring

Caring with Confidence
When caring ends, some practical matters will have to be dealt with fairly quickly, for example, benefits and housing, but you do not need to rush into making decisions about what you do next straight away.

Carers Support have put together a programme called Life After Caring, based on the popular Caring with Confidence course, the sessions look at the following: Experiencing grief, looking after yourself, finding new challenges, volunteering, learning something new and thinking about work.

We welcome suggestions for training from Carers so please let us know if there is something in particular that you would find useful.
